The average treatment time for a bone fracture is 6-8 weeks. When a fracture occurs, the soft tissue around may also be injured, leading to pain, inflammation, and swelling. Cold laser therapy has been shown to promote bone healing, decrease soft tissue inflammation, decrease pain, and increase flexibility, all with zero side effects.
The Healing Effect of Cold Laser Therapy
Cold laser therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), involves the use of light energy to heal damaged tissue and reduce pain. The light energy penetrates deeply into damaged cells and stimulates cellular activity, providing tendons, ligaments, and muscles cells with energy so they can repair themselves.
Cold laser therapy uses certain light wavelengths that stimulate therapeutic activities within the body. According to the light spectrum, visible light wavelengths range from 400nm to 700nm. However, it’s the invisible light located in the infrared spectrum that brings benefits to the body. The ones within this range that are closest to visible light on the spectrum, ranging from 800 to 2,500nm, are called near-infrared. Practitioners use wavelengths between 600nm and 1,000nm to stimulate biological actions. The light within this range can enter tissue and impact cells.
Studies have shown that cold laser therapy can stimulate the bone healing process and decrease the recovery time by 50% or more.
Apart from bone healing, cold laser therapy treats many orthopedic conditions and athletic injuries, including:
- Tennis elbow
- Golfer’s elbow
- Plantar fasciitis
- Sprains and strains
- Trauma
- Contusions
- Neck pain and back pain
- Reoccurring chronic tendonitis
Case Study
Numerous studies published in medical journals have found positive results of using cold laser therapy to encourage bone healing. Here are a few we collected:
A study published in the journal Lasers in Medical Science looked at how low-level laser therapy (LLLT) would impact fracture healing. The study was performed on rabbits that have been given tibial bone open osteotomies. The rabbits were split into a group receiving treatment and a control group. After five weeks, the researchers noted a statistically significant higher rate of bone mineral density in the group receiving the laser treatment compared to the control group. In conclusion, the laser was seen as a way to potentially enhance callus development during the early stages of bone healing.
In another randomized controlled study, it looked at how LLLT would impact femoral fracture bone repair. In the study, rats received an osteotomy with LLLT as a treatment or an osteotomy with a sham laser as the control group. Researchers looked at the fracture after eight, 13, and 18 days. The LLLT group showed increased newly formed bone and the expression of bone matrix proteins in the LLLT group. Researchers concluded that low-level laser therapy can be used to support the formation of bone tissue and as an additional therapeutic tool to help with fracture healing.
Start Healing with Cold Laser Light Pad
MiraMate Light Pad is one of the best cold laser devices on the market. Compared with other cold laser devices, it can reduce pain and swelling and speed healing and recovery at the same time. Also, it has no known side effects, you won’t experience pain, heat, redness, or swelling during or after the treatment.
